Photographer Valeria Herklotz plays with preconceived notions of portraiture, nudity and femininity, challenging the norms of the female gaze and focusing heavily on casting as a key component of achieving her vision. Her first book project, Woman, brought these ideas to life in a coming-of-age study of vulnerability and sensitivity built around considered poses and fleeting expressions. Her forthcoming projects develop these observational, portrait-centred themes, bringing her attention to adult women, in work filled with a powerful sense of identity and self-confidence.
Valeria’s unique style is informed by her background as a talented model scout, delighting in the discovery and intrigue she found in the streets of London and Berlin. Her unique photography smoulders with the passionate connection she has to her subjects’ personality and sense of self.
Her rapid rise has seen editorials for Self Service, AnOther magazine, Document Journal, The Gentlewoman, ReEdition and DAZED. Commercially, she has recently shot for Chloé, Joseph, Rokh and M/M Paris.
