Esther Theaker works from a specifically female perspective, approaching photography as a way to capture moments of sensuality and empowerment. These are often fleeting, and Theaker’s images reveal what is typically missed, conveying the authentic and emotional aspects of womanhood. Theaker works closely with her models to create psychological tension and a strong sense of narrative.
Inspired by painting and cinema, bold moments of colour, texture and light appear in Theaker’s work. Attentive to composition, she often juxtaposes the edge of the picture frame with shapes made by the female body.
Oliver Knight and Rory McGrath, founders of the design studio OK-RM, suggest: “Esther effortlessly captures the 'in-between’ ... offering the viewer a proximity to the subject that translates to a balance of intimacy and excitement.”
Theaker’s clients include Hermès, Jil Sander, Miu Miu, Bottega Veneta, Courrèges, Chloé, Jaquemus, Burberry, SuperYAYA , Talia Byre, Maryam Nassir Zadeh and Bokja Design. Her editorials have appeared in Purple, Arena Homme+, D - la Repubblica, Double, Self Service, POP, Marfa Journal, Re-Edition, System, Document Journal, The Gentlewoman, Holiday, More or Less and M Le Monde.
Theaker studied Film at the London College of Communication. In recent years, she has collaborated with designer Matthew Williams (Alyx) on a series of books published by OK-RM, London.
