British photographer William Waterworth works in counterpoint to current trends, making images that are painterly, classical and full of playful grandeur. Incorporating unexpected shifts in scale, dramatic shadow, and bespoke props and costumes, he crafts narratives that are romantic and theatrical. Waterworth often works in a natural environment rather than a studio, enjoying the unpredictability of the weather and choosing specific locations that play an important role in building a story. He works closely with a longstanding group of collaborators who complement his dedication to photography, writing and book making.
Waterworth studied History of Art at Manchester University and then moved to Paris to study photography, where he was awarded the Prix Picto de la Photographie de Mode for emerging talents in the field of fashion since 1998. He has exhibited his work at Burleigh Street Townhouse, London (2019) and Pipeline, London (2023). His fashion clients include Margaret Howell, Alexander McQueen, Erdem and John Skelton. Waterworth has contributed to magazines including British Vogue, Vogue Italia and Vogue Paris, Acne Paper, AnOther, D – la Repubblica and DAZED.
